My first plan was to follow Greece with Eastern Turkey, Iran and Central Asia - I had been wanting to visit Central Asia since my Silk Road trip through China and Pakistan in 2001. But it was January before I'd recovered enough from my broken wrist for serious planning, and I intended to leave at the beginning of April - not enough time, I thought, for the visa hassle. Plus the new Iranian president seemed to be cracking down on women's clothing (I've since been told that's not true). Central Asia would have to wait, again.
My next thought was to head north through Ukraine and Belarus to the Baltics - I had fallen in love with Vilnius in 2004. Again, there was a visa issue. $100 for a visa for Belarus, plus whatever a letter of invitation would cost, and I only really wanted to visit Brest. Then all the guidebooks kept mentioning how flat the Baltics were.
I reminded myself that I loved mountains. I still wanted to see Ukraine, but then I would head west for the Carpathians, the Alps and the Dolomites.
